Lunch at Back in the Day Bakery

We were looking for something different that we had never tried before and Back in the Day Bakery fit the bill. I had the Super Chicken sandwich which was roasted chicken, sharp cheddar, red onion, lettuce, house-made herb aioli and served on fresh baked ciabatta bread. The sandwich was pretty good. Figured we couldn't leave the bakery without trying one of the amazing desserts. Everything looked great and I went with a Key Lime Bar. It was outstanding. This place is down on Bull St here in Savannah and is worth a stop in for a quick sandwich or a dessert treat.

Steak tartare and french fries (?). |
We also went to sushi, indonesian, italian and lobster places they had on site but I guess I was too preoccupied with being on vacation to get pics of them. Sorry. Next time, I promise.
What you're looking at is some steak tartare and 'pomme frites', goose liver pate (not as good as I remember). and the last 2 are just a mish mash of shit we got through room service. 24 hour room service at the resort - we did order a hamburger at 4am one night (morning?).
Zaxby's: A Shrink Ray Hit The Chicken's fingers?

In high school Zaxby's used to be my standard after-school fare. I was good for 1-2 trips a week. We would get our food then go sit in a corner of the restaurant where the workers couldnt see us then experiment with soaking up Cherry Fanta spills with salt. True Story. I'm a rebel. Looking for some throwback yumminess and to soak my brain in Zax Sauce I talked my wife into going to Zaxby's (she hates that place) for dinner.
I got the chicken finger plate. 5 of these bad boys.
I used one of her wings and a piece of toast to show scale and I still don't think it does this situation justice. I've been to Zaxby's quite a few times since my teenage years and while I sometimes wonder why I even bother eating the fries I've never been so disappointed by the size of the chicken fingers. this was barely bigger than a wing flat and just as skinny. They were all this size. Bummer.
Next time I'm just going to buy 3 packs of Zax Sauce and eat it with a spoon. Also looking into making my own.

Steez went to Mexico - Part 2 - Mexican Food

There was a fantastic Mexican restaurant at the resort we stayed at. There seemed to be some Americanized Mexican food (or maybe I just thought it was Americanized) and then some other more regional dishes (confirmed authentico by the waitstaff who were all amazing, by the way).
Ceviche. Bomb diggity |
Mother of god this was amazing. First thing I ate there and maybe one of the most memorable. Steak tenderloin (rare) on top of some creamed spinach/corn stuff. Side of guac, pico and beans. |
Wife's fajitas. Good, nothing out of the ordinary though. |
Cactus salad. Weird man. |
Jicama salad (I think) neither one of those salads were anything I liked. |
Cheese dip with chorizo. HOLY S THIS MADE ME SMILE. |
Poblano stuffed with Beef, like a chili relleno. |
This thing was OOOO WEEE. Grouper, wrapped in a plantain leaf, cooked in aluminum foil. Amazing. |
Wife's enchiladas. Don't remember what the other 2 sauces were but the dark one was a chocolate mole type sauce. She wasn't a huge fan of them. |
dessert plate from the Mexican mariachi buffet night. the churro and the big fried thing under it were both BADASS. Rest of it was forgettable. |
A Mexican shrimp tower. they light it on fire. I didn't want shrimp. I just wanted my food to get caught on fire. |
table setting in the mexi-place. |
Steez went to Mexico - Part 1 - Buffet food.

I'm not ashamed to say I love a good buffet. All inclusive resorts usually have them, and they're usually pretty awesome. Get alot of what you want, none of what you don't and a little something new. My favorite kinds of buffets have a mix of premade hot food, people making fresh hot food and some premade cold stuff. I knew what I was getting into when I went down there. Here are just a few pics of some epic buffet trips. Other restaurant meals and some authentico mexican fare to follow soon. I can't believe I don't have a picture of it but I put this spicy green avocado sauce on almost everything I ate. I'm going to try to replicate the sauce in my own kitchen.
Stupid big omelet. chorizo, tomato, green peppers, broccoli and a side of bacon to the left. |
this is one of my "just because I can" items. chocolate cereal in chocolate milk. Elephant cereal. |
This is a post-meal picture obviously. I think this was fajitas, big plate of Nachos we shared, some taquitos and Mucho Dos XX. |
Nacho-bacon burger (my invention - delicious), nachos and some ham and cheese tortilla things that were awesome. more Dos XX. |

The Cinnamon Raisin bread is much more than that. In addition to the Cinnamon Raisin, you have this apple pie filling running through it, chunks of brown sugar, and the sugar glaze on top. It is sick and I could have eaten the whole thing. The Cannoli's were excellent as well and came in various flavors.

Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia

This place was very cool and had something for everyone. Part farmers market, part food court, and all cultures...RTM is a place to go to get a great feel for some Tastes of Philly. I got a Philly Cheese Steak with provolone, onions, and mushrooms. The Dutch apple turnover is an Amish treat. Whole apple peeled and cored. It is then filled with butter, brown sugar, spices, and other good stuff. They thing wrap it in dough and bake it. Amazing!

Lou Malnati's Pizzeria
Eaten by

You can't go to Chicago without eating at Lou's! This place is an institution the originator of the Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza. As with every dinner we had in Chicago, we started off with the Calimari. This didn't disappoint at all. We then got a large Malnati Salad. This is Romaine lettuce, diced tomatoes, black olives, sliced mushrooms, crumbled Volpi salami (which was like crunchy bacon bits), gorgonzola cheese and tossed with Lou's famous dressing with a touch of romano cheese. This bowl was so big, I ate two plates of salad, and through 5 of us we hardly made a dent in this beast.
It was then time for the main event...the pizza. We got one medium cheese and one large of "The Lou". The Lou consists of fresh spinach, mushrooms and sliced tomatoes covered with a blend of mozzarella, romano and cheddar cheese. That alone sounds great, but we kicked it up by adding in sausage as well. This took a great pizza and made it outfreakinstanding. I somehow plowed through 3 slices of this and I think I am still suffering from pizza sweats.
We then finished off this meal by watching the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup and by eating the warm Chocolate Chip pie thing. It was a chocolate chip cookie baked to the point where it was still soft and gooey. It was then topped with homemade vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. We only got one, but could have very easily made out way through 2 of these.
